Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has declared a lockdown of the capital Metro Manila, after raising the maximum alert level in response to the coronavirus. The lockdown will cover 16 cities for a period of at least 30 days. All modes of domestic travel in and out of Metro Manila will be restricted. Duterte has signed a resolution that would allow the government to order a ban on public gatherings, close schools, and quarantine communities with suspected infections. A total of 53 cases have been confirmed in the Philippines and five people have died from the virus.
