'Kalaripayattu' (Or simply 'Kalari')- Mother of Martial Arts
'Kalaripayattu' is an ancient martial art of Kerala. The term 'Kalari' denotes a gymnasium, where proper training is imparted for mind as well as muscle. 'Payattu' means armed combat with different varieties of weapons. 'Kalaripayattu' is a nerve-racking and dangerous mode of armed combat in which an expert 'Kalari' trainee can either kill a man or maim him for life by a simple thrust at any one of the vulnerable parts in the opponent's body.
'Kalaripayattu' is the exclusive martial arts legacy of Kerala, taken to China by the Buddhist monks which became the fabled model for the modern martial arts. Buddhist writings show that 'Kalaripayattu' flourished during the 5th Century A.D. The founder of Sen Buddhism, Bodhi Dharma, had visited the southernmost part of Kerala, stayed here for a pretty long time and learned 'Kalaripayattu'.
