Photographing Iceland Waterfalls in Summer and Autumn
Seasons are very important in Iceland. In mid-summer, you get midnight sun which means the sky stays bright 24 hours a day. Your best “sunset” shooting hours are between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. when the sun goes below the horizon. So, plan your sleep hours accordingly.
In the autumn, the sun is up during more traditional hours, but days get very short heading into winter.
How to Dress for Iceland – Assume You’ll Get Wet
Weather changes quickly in Iceland – assume you’ll get wet during any season. Bring rain gear and waterproof hiking boots.
Be prepared to protect your camera – disposable shower caps are perfect to slip over your camera and lens.
Mike’s Camera Gear Tips
On one of his visits, Mike took a full range of lenses, including a couple of very heavy long lenses. As it turned out, he hardly used them, preferring wider angles for most shots.
Mike’s big tip: watch how much weight you want to carry as you hike. Reduced weight is one reason he switched to the Micro 4/3 system he currently shoots with.
