Phenomemic manipulation is just the ability to hear the individual sounds that make up words, and manipulate, or change them. If you practice phonemic awareness skills for just one minute every day, you will see a huge improvement in your child’s reading and writing. But you must do it every day for a minute. In this case the kids are adding a syllable to another syllable.
You can do this activity while driving or taking a walk or waiting in line at the grocery store.
This morning I saw a street named ‘hamlet’, which made me think about words that end with the let syllable. So I asked the children to add ‘let’ to the syllables that I gave them - try it with your child and see how they do!
pig
toi (pronounced toy)
voi (vi-OH)
wal (pronounced wol/ wall)
ank
It’s OK if they don’t know the meaning of all the words, this teaches them they can read words without knowing the meaning / and is a great opportunity to teach new vocabulary!
