On August 18, 2020, a woman in Gwinnett County, Georgia summoned the police to her residence, claiming that her neighbors had harassed her and her son, and caused damage to her property. The officer arrived at the home and spoke to the complainant, who said that her neighbors drove by, yelling threats at her and her son before throwing juice and a bottle at her car and driving away. He then went across the street to the neighbor’s house to speak to the suspects. The accused group of women were sitting on their porch when he arrived. While trying to speak to one woman in particular – who the officer saw in the video provided by the complainant – another of the women in a blue bandana continued to yell and be aggressive with the officer. The officer quickly got frustrated and attempted to arrest the woman for obstructing his investigation, but she proceeded to run around the porch and cling onto her mother in an attempt to evade being handcuffed. After pulling out his taser and issuing several warnings to get on the ground, the officer tased her. She continued to resist arrest for another few minutes until another officer showed up and the two were able to get her in handcuffs and inside the patrol car.
She was charged with willful obstruction of law enforcement and simple battery against a police officer. The Gwinnett Police Department reviewed the incident and found the tasing to be justified, but also found the officer’s conduct and failure to use de-escalation tactics before resorting to aggression to be a great violation of department policy. He was fired three days after the arrest.
