I often get asked for the best way to develop bass drum independence. In this lesson, I'll go through a concept used by teachers and schools all across the world. It's a simple concept that takes you through all the different permutations, placements of notes, and one-beat combinations within the 16th note grid.

This is how it works:
First we start with single strokes, one bass drum note per beat. It has (4) possible positions in the 16th note grid.
Then we get into double strokes, and two strokes per beat. This gives us (6) different positions and combinations.
After that, we deal with triples. This has (4) different combinations.
Last but not least, quads. Only (1) combination here.
Then, you choose ANY ostinato that you want to work on, and place that over top of this system. There's an endless amount of possibilities here, with different ostinatos for left foot, right hand and left hand
While I mention that this system was introduced to many in our generation by educators such as Benny Greb and Mike Johnston, please understand that this system and concept has been around for a really long time.
Lastly, if you're able to memorize this system, you can also try to apply it to any other limb. It works just as good, and exactly the same.
IF you enjoyed this lesson, let me know and I might make another lesson based on the same system for triplets.
