DO WE REALLY NEED CARBS FOR OPTIMAL ATHLETIC PERFORMANCE? I’m not convinced! Ultimately, this question appears to boil down to two things IMO: 1) full muscle glycogen stores 2) adequate muscle creatine. Traditionally, we’ve been told that we must have carbs for #1 but many studies argue against this as long as well are consuming enough protein (Around 1g per lb body weight). In this video from my Fundamental Health podcast I break this down in detail and review many of these studies which show equivalent levels of glycogen storage, utilization and repletion between LOW CARB and HIGH CARB athletes. I also discuss studies showing no decline in both endurance or sprint performance between these groups of athletes. Why are we not surprised? OUR BODY CAN USE PROTEIN TO MAKE GLYCOGEN, and there is no absolute requirement for glucose in the human diet. Many tradition ketogenic diets restrict protein as they chase ketone levels, leading to issues, but a low carb diet with robust protein intake leads to equivalent glycogen stores and equivalent performance when studied in the lab. We also know that diets like a carnivore diet will be very high in creatine, so #2 isn’t a problem at ALL! On low carbs diets it is important to increase salt intake to keep blood volume high- as I discussed with James DiNicolantonio in last week’s episode of my podcast, FUNDAMENTAL HEALTH. I break all of this down in great detail in THE CARNIVORE CODE, which will be out next month (yes, there will be audible, kindle versions!). What do you guys think? Carbs for sports performance?? Necessary or not?
