How old is a star? Somewhere between the start and end of the universe.
Jason Curtis, a researcher at Columbia, uses star rotation to get a more precise measurement of a star’s age. For the past two years, Curtis worked with NYC high school students through the American Museum of Natural History’s science research mentoring program to build a model for age-dating stars to understand how our galaxy evolved. They’ve made their work available as a set of web-based tutorials so that others can follow along and learn.
