In July 1864, Union miners from Pennsylvania, working in a plan conceived by Lt. Col. Henry Pleasants, dug a tunnel under a Confederate fort. They packed it with 8,000 pounds of gunpowder and set off a massive explosion, creating a crater 30 feet deep and about 130 feet wide. The attack that followed was poorly executed, and Union soldiers ended up trapped in the crater under intense Confederate fire.
