A rock’n roll – akkor még a pályája elején járó – királyát, a mindössze 21 éves Elvis Presley-t a hírek szerint megérintették az 1956-os magyarországi események és a forradalom leverése után tett azért, hogy segélyeket gyűjtsön a magyar rászorulóknak. 1957 elején a legendás Ed Sullivan Show színpadán Peace in the Valley (Béke a völgyben) címmel egy dalt is elénekelt az amerikai televízióban a magyarországi forradalomra emlékezve és a műsorvezető, Ed Sullivan tolmácsolásában arra buzdította a nézőket, hogy adakozzanak, küldjenek segélycsomagokat a nehéz helyzetbe került magyaroknak.
Elvis ’56-os szerepe sokáig nem kapott hangsúlyt Magyarországon, aztán 2011-ben a Margit-híd budai hídfőjénél lévő köztér Elvis Presley nevét kapta meg, majd az énekest ugyanabban az évben posztumusz Budapest díszpolgárává avatták, a magyarországi forradalom eszméivel való őszinte együttérzéséért, az áldozatok megsegítése, továbbá a forradalom eseményeinek amerikai népszerűsítésében vállalt kiemelkedő szerepéért.
1956. november 18-án már Amerikában is nagy visszhangja volt a forradalomnak. A New York-i emigránsok Mártonffy István mérnök segítségével akcióba lendültek, hogy a Szabadság-szobor fáklyájához kitűzzék a magyar zászlót a következő felirattal: „Stop genocide, save Hungary" (magyarul: „Állítsák meg a tömeggyilkosságot, mentsék meg Magyarországot").
Az 1956-os forradalom és szabadságharc, vagy az 1956-os népfelkelés Magyarország népének a sztálinista terror elleni forradalma és a szovjet megszállás ellen folytatott szabadságharca, amely a 20. századi magyar történelem egyik legmeghatározóbb eseménye volt. A budapesti diákoknak az egyetemekről kiinduló békés tüntetésével kezdődött 1956. október 23-án, és a fegyveres felkelők ellenállásának felmorzsolásával fejeződött be Csepelen november 11-én.
