T4 Conversion to T3 - A hidden cause of hypothyroid symptoms // Many people have their thyroid symptoms treated by their doctors just looking at the lab values and never considering how the patient feels and functions. This has led to widespread dissatisfaction with thyroid and hypothyroid care. While it’s not always well understood why someone can continue to have hypothyroid symptoms with normal TSH and labs, one of the possibilities is a decrease in thyroid hormone conversion. T4 must be converted to T3 for maximum metabolic effect and if we can’t do that, then our cells will suffer the same fate as if thyroid hormone was low in general. In this video, we talk about where conversion fits with our thyroid pathway, how conversion of T4 to T3 works, and what can be done to support this step in our thyroid physiology.
