Concise 33-minute overview of the life and career of Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775-1851), described on Wikipedia as “an English Romanticist landscape painter, watercolourist, and printmaker. Turner was considered a controversial figure in his day, but is now regarded as the artist who elevated landscape painting to an eminence rivalling history painting. Although renowned for his oil paintings, Turner is also one of the greatest masters of British watercolour landscape painting. He is commonly known as ‘the painter of light’ and his work is regarded as a Romantic preface to Impressionism.”
The film shows lots of his paintings as well as numerous archival illustrations to depict the time he lived in, supplemented by location shots of the places he lived and worked and the sites he visited on his painting trips, including Wales and Italy. Effective narration by Jeremy Irons. Produced in 2007 in conjunction with an exhibit at the National Gallery of Art.
