When you lose all your life in the first confrontation with Dracula, Maria comes and saves you by sacrificing her powers to make Richter invincible for the remainder of the battle. If this happens to you, however Alucard will not receive a stats boost in the next chapter. Although, this scene is awesome, in the long run it is better to not lose all your life and get a slightly more powerful Alucard later.
