East and West Berlin: two governments that could not be more different. While the West lives in modest prosperity and political freedom, in the East SED socialism works hand in hand with Soviet occupation. Dozens of working people commute between the two parts of Berlin daily. Schönhauser Allee is the last S-Bahn station on GDR territory. The first S-Bahn of the day is often called the Siemens Express here, because in the morning it is full of Siemens workers going to work in the West. Not least because the western D-mark is worth about five times the value of an Ostmark. In turn, many West Berliners travel to the East to get cheap haircuts or buy everyday goods for a fraction of a D-Mark.
