With heart at rest I climbed the citadel's
Steep height, and saw the city as from a tower,
Hospital, brothel, prison, and such hells,

Your furnished rooms,
Your gardens full of sighs and intrigues,
Your temples vomiting out prayers and music,
And your fireworks, eruptions of joy,
That bring laughter to the sky, mute and gloomy.

Your principles saves and your laws spat upon,
Your lofty monuments where the fog clutches on,
Your domes of metal flaming in the sun,
Your Queens of the stage with their seductive voices,
Your alarm bells, your canons, your deafening orchestra,
Your magic paving stones built up into forteresses.

O you, bear witness that I've done my duty
Like a perfect chemist and like a holy soul.
For I have extracted the quintessence of everything,
You gave me your mud and I turned it into gold.
