🇬🇧 Congratulations to Elliott Lancaster who has been named as a Top 10 finalist of the inaugural Chegg.org Global Student Prize!

Elliott is an environmental innovator who has overcome immense odds to succeed in education and help others in his community. At the age of 15, he had to manage his family’s finances and liaise with financial institutions to ensure that they did not become homeless. Fast forward nine years and Elliott is now studying for a postgraduate degree at Keele University while tirelessly coordinating and campaigning for mental health, social enterprise, sustainability, and a solution to homelessness.

In 2016, Elliott established Utter Rubbish – a social enterprise and mobile app connecting citizens to local councils, helping to reduce waste and updating residents on recycling policies in real-time. The app was initially piloted by Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council. The app has reached an estimate of over 4,000 households in the area, and Elliott has signed agreements with other councils to roll it out. Due to the impact of this project, Elliott won the EAUC’s prestigious Green Gown Award for Enterprise. More recently, his assistance has been sought in this area by a council in Colombia.

For carrying out over 1,000 hours of volunteering in the community, he has received the Diana Award, Keele Student Union’s Diamond Volunteering Award and Stoke City’s Red and White Hero medal, as well as being recognized as Trustee of the Year by Support Staffordshire.

In addition to first-class undergraduate grades, Elliott has published several times in management and education journals. He has been recognised as a Microsoft Innovative Educator, an Associate Fellow of the HEA, and a Finalist in the British Education Awards.

The Chegg.org Global Student Prize, launched in partnership with the Varkey Foundation, is a new $100,000 award to be given to one exceptional student that has made a real impact on learning, the lives of their peers, and on society beyond. The winner will be announced on November 10 via a virtual ceremony taking place at UNESCO’s headquarters in Paris.
