Janet Hamill and Patti Smith at the release of Janet's poetry book "Body of Water" in the Bowery Poetry Club, NY, 02Nov2008.
A 'spontaneous improvisation' of the poem (of Patti's choice) "The Man With The Scarlet Knee Bands". Later Patti did her song "My Blakean Year" which she said reminds her of poetry-writing.
"The Man With The Scarlet Knee Bands"
Heart be still, be quiet
the oppression's burning you
like fires out of control
be still, be quiet
throw buckets on hot stone you set out so feverishly to walk upon
Be calm, be confident in your goal
The man with the scarlet knee bands will come
The man will come to breathe on your hands
and bathe your feet with water from an invisible world
Be still, be full of hope and expectation
and mindful of the mystery of things
for he will come down a long long stairwell of approach
he will come, the man with the scarlet knee bands will come
to join you and hold you in a yellow light that fills your holes
