Like the Dust Bowl, with its blinding black winds that lasted for years, or the biblical plague of locusts, the blizzard of 1949 was actually not a single event, but a series of storms that began in November of 1948 and continuted into spring. The monumental drifts it left in its wake finally melted...in July. The devastation was so extreme, the Air Force had to airlift drop supplies for towns and farms. The snow stopped trains, buried houses, and threatened millions of head of cattle in four states.
