🎵Creating musical phrases over a jazz standard like 'All of Me' can be daunting. We often hear that just play arpeggios over the chords, but how do you translate an arpeggio shape on the fingerboard into a musical phrase that doesn't sound like you are just running arpeggios? Yet, so many of the greats solos are largely comprised of arpeggios/chord tones.
In today's lesson I use the first 8 bars of the swinging standard 'All of Me' and show you to move practically from using arpeggios as they are into phrases that flow with the chords. I break this down into:
🔴 Firstly knowing the arpeggios you need
🔴 How to approach learning them (specifically internalising the sound)
🔴 How you need to find the notes that are close together between chords
The above is by no means a quick process, but with work it means you can go beyond playing licks and arpeggios and make music in an authentic way.
