This could hardly be called a diplomatic meeting. It was America expressing itself in the Pacific and proving it had some of the same genetics as the British Empire, who “opened” much of Asia. However, the US did Japan, becoming the first Western nation, other than The Netherlands who had ongoing trade, to establish relations with Japan in over 200 years. Other Western nations soon followed and created their own treaties.

I learned from a diary written in the foreign settlement in Yokohama that the 18th century moniker of Redcoats was no longer appropriate for the British. They were called Reds in the 19th century. Nothing to do with this, but I once used it in fan fiction novella I wrote a few years ago.
