New York City, 1960s. In the Golden Age of advertising, everyone is selling something and nothing is what it seems.
- You're leaving?
- Yes. For the day.
- Oh, okay.
- I'm going home. You can reach me there if necessary.
- I've always wondered why he's ignored me. Probably because he's so good-looking he can go outside the office for whatever he wants. Most of these fellas can't.
- He seemed different to me.
- Well, either way, you have to do your job. Keep his record clean here and at home. Honestly, if he sees that in you, you are solid gold.
- That's my job?
- Yes. That's his private life. Private. That's how these men are. And it's why we love them.
- I don't love him.
- Fine. Look, if you're even thinking about passing judgment, then you're in the wrong business.
- Okay.
- You need to relax. I have never come over here and not seen you with a look on your face that said "I need a drink."
- This job is odd.
- But it's the best.
Peggy accidentally overhears that Don has an affair and then reveals it to Joan.
Peggy overhears Don and Midge talking on the phone, making plans for a quick sex during a lunch break. The next day, Betty and the kids arrive arrive at the Sterling Cooper office for a scheduled family portrait. Desperate Peggy, thinking he is having sex with his mistress, has to cover for his absence and infidelity. Peggy does not know how to effectively lie to Betty about why he is not in the office. In a state of panic, Peggy runs to Joan asking her what she should do. Joan persuades Peggy to tell where she suspects Don is. She reveals the existence of the mistress to Joan, who advises her how to handle the situation - keep it simple, return to Don's office, entertain them, just say she forgot to remind Don and let him come up with his own excuse. Joan tells Peggy that it's part of her job to cover for her boss. Peggy is horrified that she has shared a possibly destructive part of Don's life with Joan and Joan seizes the opportunity to make Peggy feel bad about it.
She later discusses it with Joan, telling her that this seems like an odd job. Joan says that this is the greatest job, apparently reveling in the intrigue.
Mad Men: season 1, episode 5: 5G S01E05
Cast: Elisabeth Moss, Christina Hendricks
Joan Holloway Harris is a hyper feminine and charming woman, with a pragmatic view of sex and attraction. Her ultimate dream goal in life is to find a promising and devoted man to marry, and then become the strength and motivation supporting him behind the scenes as he achieves success. To this end, Joan has carefully prepared and practiced, learning the social and housewife skills necessary to be a helpful, upper-class partner, while maintaining a beautiful appearance through self care. She has many playful affairs with powerful men who adore her, but whom she discounts as marriage material. They have already achieved their success, and with most of them being married, do not fit her romantic ideal of devoted husband. Joan has little desire to be a trophy second wife.
Joan and Peggy do not get along at first; Joan is contemptuous of Peggy's demure attitude and conservative dress, while Peggy is intimidated by Joan's beauty and assertiveness. Over the course of the series, however, the two become good friends, and support each other through their personal and professional struggles, with Joan being especially supportive of Peggy's evolution as a copywriter in the male-dominated culture of advertising.
Christina Hendricks (May 3, 1975) is an American actress and former model. Hendricks has been credited as having an ideal curvy body shape. Some argue that her portrayal of Joan has revolutionized perceptions of beauty on television. In 2010, a poll of female readers taken by Esquire magazine named her "the sexiest woman in the world".She was also voted "Best Looking Woman in America". A study by the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons attributed a 10% rise of the number of women receiving breast augmentation surgery in part to Hendricks' influence.
Hendricks commented: "I was working my butt off on Mad Men and then all anyone was talking about was my body."
