These exercises , No. 6 & 7 - Ascending and Descending Slurs (Hammer-ons & Pull Offs), from 20 Favorite Exercises, aim to expose the beginner player to what is required of slur techniques. I walk through the exercises and then give a lesson with some tips.
This exercise is No. 6 – Left Hand Slur Exercise: Vertical Builder. In a vertical builder you travel across the strings rather than up or down the fingerboard. This exercise is similar to No. 2 – Left Hand Position – Vertical Builders. So it’s highly recommended that you secure your hand position before trying the slurs. Keep the slur fingers light and snappy. Slurs do not require strength. They only need a good hand position with curved fingers that hover over the frets. Play right next to the frets and snap the finger in the string from above.
This exercise, No. 7 - Left Hand Slur Exercise – Horizontal Builder, has a very similar aim to No. 3 – Left Hand Position: Horizontal Builder. During each shift you should release all the pressure/tension in the left hand. This creates a fluid left hand that builds in relaxation between accurate left hand slurs. Keep the fingers light and right next to the frets. Go for an even, legato, sound with snappy fingers. Strength is not needed for the slurs. If you are hovering over the string and use an accurate snap into it you will achieve the result. Make sure your fingers are curved and that you're on your fingertips.
