Want to learn the muscle up? Try this test:
Pull up as explosively as you can and see how high you get. If you're able to get your lower chest above the bar, you should have enough power to do the muscle up.
Sometimes I come across people in the gym or in a calisthenics park attempting the muscle up. Before I have them any tips, I watch to see how high they can pull. If they get their lower chest to clear the bar, I walk over, give them a few tips, and they achieve the muscle up a few moments later. It happens every time.
The pull is the most important part of the muscle up. You need to be able to pull up explosively before you even think about attempting it. If you try this test and can't get your lower chest to clear the bar, the best thing to do is work on your explosive pull ups. Then, when you get comfortable doing them, try the test again and see if you can clear the bar.
