The seminar video describes the Computer Assisted Personal Interviewing (CAPI) method which is being used in the ongoing National Health Literacy Survey being implemented in the Philippines by the AHLA Country Office Philippines, based at the University of the Philippines- College of Public Health
In CAPI, a computer program is used to convert the paper questionnaire into digital form. Interviewers will enter the responses directly into the computer (tablet or iPad) instead of the traditional paper and pen. The separate process of manual data entry to transfer responses from the paper form of the questionnaire to an electronic format is no longer necessary in CAPI. As a result, encoding error, which can affect the accuracy of the results, commonly encountered in the traditional paper and pen interviewing (PAPI) method (PAPI) is minimized and the time elapsed between completion of data collection and data availability is significant reduced. Moreover, the cost of CAPI administration is lower compared to PAPI because the process of printing, transport, distribution of questionnaires to the study sites and the separate encoding of responses from paper to electronic format becomes unnecessary. Although there is cost involved in using CAPI including the acquisition of tablets/iPads and programming fees, the cost is offset by savings from activities that normally form part of the paper and pen method.
