Big news for property owners in Fulton County about taxes. The state stepped in Thursday to halt the collection of property taxes.
The Georgia Department of Revenue has rejected what is called the county’s “tax digest,” which must be approved by the state before property tax collections can occur.
The dramatic move has the potential to have a huge impact on basic county services. The biggest of which could be in Fulton County Public Schools.
Not long ago, the county caught the ire of tens of thousands of its residents who complained after a significant spike in their property tax assessments. The county attempting to make good with its residents set up an appeals process. Something the state said was not properly adjudicated.
The move to halt property tax collection drew a swift response from the Fulton County School System who called the situation dire.
The released the following statement:
“The district now has a cash flow problem. We are trying to determine how the district will operate without the anticipated tax revenue, and we may need to borrow money to make our payroll and pay our bills.”
Fulton County officials came out Thursday night trying to calm nerves calling the issues "routine."
They have requested a hearing for a temporary order to allow the collection of issuing property tax bills. That hearing has been set for November 3.
