STORYLINE
Wedding dowries were banned in India in 1961, but like the illegal caste system, it's a practice that continues. Another even more terrible practice is the murder of new brides by in-laws because of dowry problems. Figures are imprecise, but it was believed that dowry deaths had diminished - until recently. With the increasing availability of consumer goods more Indian families, whether rich or poor, appear to be demanding dowries. As a result, the number of dowry deaths is also increasing.
