Maitlis last week singled out Sir Robbie Gibb, the former Number 10 communications director, in her first public speech since quitting the BBC.
She said it was not about “following the line” but “trying to find the truth”, adding: “I’ve never been told what to say – or what not to say, maybe more importantly.”
Her comments appeared to contradict the remarks made by Maitlis, the former Newsnight presenter, in her MacTaggart Lecture at the Edinburgh TV Festival.
In addition to singling out Sir Robbie, Maitlis claimed the BBC’s “myopic style of journalism” achieved only “a superficial balance” while “obscuring a deeper truth”.
