This summer world heritage city Bruges becomes even more attractive hosting the Triennial Bruges 2021, that places contemporary art and architecture in dialogue with the medieval city.
The Triennial runs from May 8th to October 24th 2021 and brings local and international artists together in one large outdoor exhibition.
So no excuse for modern art lovers for skipping Bruges this summer since modern art is best enjoyed in open air and unusual settings.
And it is completely free of charge.
The Triennial comes just at the right time since we expect that International tourists will be allowed to travel to Europe and Belgium again this summer.
The theme of this years’ art and architecture route is TraumA referring to both dream (traum) and trauma. Bruges is more than a popular tourist destination on many bucket lists.
People live and work here, and what happens behind many façades often stays hidden and is not always ‘happy go lucky’.
This Triennial wants to show the less known sides of the city and so many of the installations this year can be found away from the classical tourist route.
One of the hotspots of this Triennial will be "Happy Coincidences" by US artist Amanda Browder.
Happy Coincides manages to connect the present with the past in a special way. The textile installation intended for the Verversdijk is a reference to the dyers who used the canal (Reie) in the Middle Ages to dye the Flemish cloth.
The abstract work, featuring bright colours and playful patterns, came to life in collaboration with the people of Bruges. After a collection campaign, the artist set to work with a group of volunteers to photograph the pieces and stitch the fabrics together.
Amanda Browder is known for her enormous textile installations, which adorn bridges, walls, homes and public spaces in urban environments all over the world. Each installation is created from collected material: pieces of fabric donated by the local community. Browder arranges these pieces and then sews them together with the help of a host of local volunteers. Each of her colourful installations is specifically developed for its chosen location, based on her impressions.
