In this video, I review the towing performance of our 2019 VW Atlas. We have now towed our 17 ft, 4,300 LB travel trailer over a variety of twists and terrains. The Atlas has proven to not only be reliable but a very capable tow vehicle in our experience. I have not done any performance upgrades to the Atlas.
I have upgraded the hitch receiver to a CURT Class III to withstand the extra stress put on the vehicle by the WD (weight distributing) hitch. The hitch we have rigged to our travel trailer is the Huskey TS Centerline. It is a combined WD and anti-sway hitch. The Husky TS is packaged with a variety of spring bars with varying capacity. I went with the 400-600 lb tongue weight model as to not overcompensate and damage the rear frame of the vehicle. This is very important. These types of hitches do not increase your vehicle's towing capacity. They alter the way the weight is distributed between the front and rear axles of the tow vehicle. When towing I use some extended mirrors so I can see around the trailer. The last item I had to purchase to make the Atlas tow ready was a 7-way socket for the trailer's harness. Although the VW Atlas tow package includes the necessary wiring for your trailer, It does not have the socket to plug the tailers harness into.
