Is It Cheaper to Pave or Concrete a Driveway?
There are two primary surfaces for driveways, concrete and asphalt, and several factors to consider when deciding on the appropriate surface for your driveway, with cost being one of the major factors. There are also several ways to look at the relative cost between the two surfaces.
Besides the cost at installation, you should also consider maintenance costs as well as expected lifetime of the driveway with each surface type. Costs will vary over time and in different areas, but in general an asphalt driveway will cost $2 - $4 per sqft to install, whereas concrete driveways will cost closer to $6 per sqft. But that’s only part of the equation, next we consider maintenance.
Asphalt driveways should be seal coated within the first year of installation, to protect it from the elements. This should also be repeated every 3 or 4 years, to extend the lifetime of the driveway. Concrete driveways can be sealed, but it is not as critical. Any cracks in the concrete driveway should be repaired as quickly as possible to prevent it from getting worse. Overall, the asphalt driveway will require more maintenance than the concrete driveway.
The expected lifetime of each surface type should also be considered but is not as critical. With an expected lifetime upwards of 30 years for an asphalt driveway and 50 years for a concrete driveway, most people won’t even stay in their homes that long for it to matter.
Asphalt driveways cost less to install but requires more maintenance. There are many other factors to consider when choosing a surface, particularly aesthetics, but from strictly a cost standpoint, asphalt would be the way to go.
