Black Lagoon is our often discussed 2006 cult classic. The anime is a wealth of analysis, and today we’ll be returning to look at how Black Lagoon discusses power; what it takes to earn it, if it’s worth it, the conventions that make it, and even more. While this covers the usual characters like Rock, Revy, Roberta and more, one stands out from the crowd this time; Balalaika. The former Soviet captain turned Roanapur mafia tycoon and her squad are some of the few soldiers with training who've seen bloody war, as the anime focuses on gangsters, crooks, and fake fighters. Through her and these soldiers, and how they contrast against these unsavory characters, a message starts to form about power, one which praises, and warns against people like Balalaika, with her unbleached record, as well as a few other characters. From Rock’s almost clone Garcia to Yukio, everyone will be a bit involved in this analysis.
