As part of New England Conservatory's celebration of the late Gunther Schuller, the NEC Percussion Ensemble is pleased to present Schuller's Grand Concerto for Percussion and Keyboards, in a free concert, Sunday November 15, 2015 in NEC's Jordan Hall. A second performance will be included in an all-Schuller concert at NEC on November 19.
The concerto was premiered by the NEC Percussion Ensemble 10 years ago almost to the day, as part of an 80th birthday celebration for Schuller, and was subsequently released on Naxos records as part of a two-CD compilation of NEC Percussion Ensemble commissions.
In this video, NEC Percussion Ensemble director Frank Epstein visits the Avedis Zildjian Co. cymbal factory in search of 12 perfect cymbals that will provide the core tonality of the Grand Concerto.
