Dean Aladay is almost totally blind. That has not stopped him from being a guitarist, electronic musician, and singer-songwriter in the band The Shades. It has also not stopped him from being a fashion photographer and cinematographer — artforms that depend on the faculty of sight even more than music. His creative curiosity, his impulse to express, are abilities that look beyond barriers.
His sound is soulful and usually upbeat. But he says his real sound is not about a tone. “I have a purpose, and that’s the same as my sound. They’re identical. I simply think: what is my goal with this music? It’s easy for me to answer. I want to provide hope — to bring as much hope and as much light to someone’s life as I can. I had a time in my life when certain artists and records really saved my life. That helped me understand that if you keep pushing it, you’ll get to where you want to be. My goal is to provide hope to those kids who may have lost it along the way.”
After playing the Seaboard Block for the first time, the multi-instrumentalist went back and reworked 48 of his tracks. “It’s somewhere between a piano, a violin, a guitar, and a drum,” he says of the Seaboard Block. “It changes everything. I could suddenly be so much more expressive in digital music. If I play a cello sound, I can now think like a cellist thinks: how much vibrato do I want? How much bow strength? And I love that, because I’m not a computer technician. I don’t want to make music by changing parameters in MIDI. I want to play it with my hands and feel it like a musician.”
