STORYLINE:
Police have rescued at least seven people out of the luxury Oberoi hotel in Mumbai, one of three buildings where gunmen are still holding hostages in India's financial capital.
One of the freed hostages told reporters he had seen many bodies inside the hotel. He did not give his name.
He refused to give more details, saying he had promised police not to discuss the rescue while it was ongoing.
At least 104 people are dead and more than 300 wounded following a suspected militant attack on more than 10 sites in Mumbai.
More than 300 were also wounded in the highly coordinated attacks on Wednesday night by bands of gunmen.
The attackers invaded two five star hotels, a popular restaurant, a crowded train station, a Jewish centre and at least five other sites, armed with assault rifles, hand grenades and explosives.
Gunfire could still be heard at the Oberoi hotel as the sun set over the beach opposite on Thursday evening.
A previously unknown Islamic militant group claimed responsibility for the carnage, the latest in a series of nationwide terror attacks over the past three years.
Among the dead were at least one Australian, a Japanese and a British national, said a senior government official of Maharashtra state, whose capital is Mumbai.
He confirmed 104 people were killed and 314 injured.
