The provenance, or record of an object's ownership, is at times central to the historical significance of an artwork. In March 1938, the Nazis occupied Austria. They took many important works of art, including Gustav Klimt's "Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I." For decades after World War II, members of the Bloch-Bauer family fought to reclaim the painting.
This painting is now on permanent display at Neue Galerie New York.
