The Trakenher jump consists of a rail over an open ditch and can be quite scary for both the horse and the rider. The name for this cross-country jump, originated in in the 17th century when fence lines where installed over open ditches in Trakehnen, an area in East Prussia (now Russia). This area became the home to the main stud for breeding the warmblood horses, also known as Trakehners.
