My RAM 1500 has the ZF 8 speed transmission and apparently this transmission does not need to be ever serviced and has a lifetime fluid change interval. I find this hard to believe and I'm curious why Chrysler/ Dodge would put in the owners manual to change the fluid at 160,000km if this transmission has truly a lifetime fluid fluid interval.
I went to the dodge dealership to ask a few question about when to service my transmission and when I should think about changing the fluid because I have over 100,000km on the truck and have towed well over 10,000km leading me to believe there is probably a greater change the fluid will deteriorate faster because of this heavy duty use. The dealership then told me that they don't actually service these transmission and that they have never had any issues with these 8 speeds. I find that very hard to believe and I was willing to pay them to service my transmission because I wanted it done correctly as the procedure to change the fluid is very lengthy.
I have read that the German manufacturer ZF has actually set a fluid change interval and they do not say that the fluid is lifetime so I'm curious what other people have done and if anyone has found some decent information on these transmission about the actual fluid change interval.
