In the aftermath of the death of five villagers from Mukroh village of West Jaintia Hills, Hynñiewtrep Youth Council (HYC) General Secretary Roy Kupar Synrem lamented that the state government has not taken a “strong stand” against its Assam counterpart.
Talking to EastMojo in Mukroh on the day of the incident, Synrem opined that “this incident (at Mukroh) would never have happened had the government of Meghalaya kept its word” regarding the resolution of the border talks with its neighbouring state. Stating that the Assam police has been “brutal to the people of Meghalaya”, Synrem called on the state government to “take a strong stand against the Assam government.”
Synrem told EastMojo that Mukroh villagers had informed him that 4-5 Meghalaya police personnel were present not too far from the site of the incident.
“In other states like Nagaland and Mizoram, police have been empowered to defend their citizens. In Meghalaya, it seems that the police are more empowered to deal with local NGOs in Shillong. But in case of border areas like these, it seems like they are waiting for a nod from the higher-ups,” he told our correspondent.
Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) president Dundee Khongsit said that the state government has neglected the “border issue for a long time and not strengthened the police force.”
