On the great feast of the Dormition day of Virgin Mary, the miracle snakes of Panagia Fidousa make their annual appearance in a church on the island of Kefalonia in the Ionian Sea.
The small black and white snakes have the sign of a cross on their heads. They are known to belong to the Telescopus Falax species, European Cat Snakes, and are harmless to the humans.
They first appear in the church courtyard, the walls and the bell tower on August 5th.
The current chapel sits on the space that was once a convent, and in 18th century, the nuns’ home was under attack by marauding pirates. After fervent prayers to the All Holy Theotokos, the chapel was suddenly filled with hundreds of snakes. Though snakes of these kind rarely bite humans, they are still venomous, and rather fearsome in appearance. The sudden infestation was enough to stop the pirates who fled the convent in terror.
