The traditional Japanese clothing is the kimono, but the kind you would wear at a ryokan are called yukata. They almost look the same, but are slightly different.

The word "kimono" originally meant "something to wear" in Japanese, and referred to clothing in general.

There are different ranks in kimono and the ranks differ depending on how you categorize them, but there are more than 10 kinds. The highest rank is the fully white kimono called 白無垢 Shiromuku. Which means yukata is a kind of kimono too.

Yukata means “clothes for bathing” and it was used like a bathrobe during the Edo period. This is why you don’t wear the juban underclothes and tabi socks for the yukata unlike other kinds of kimono. Today we often wear yukata at ryokan hotels as room wear or at summer festivals for fun.

Also, yukata is much easier to wear than kimono, so if you want to learn how to wear kimono, we recommend you first practice with yukata.
