NOVE Microphones Academy -
Recording acoustic guitars with 2 microphones.
In this video we show you 3 different techniques for recording acoustic guitar performances with 2 microphones and listen to the respective results.
The first technique is the X-Y technique, which is achieved by positioning the microphones on on top the other with their capsules almost touching each other and forming an angle that can vary from 90 to 120 degrees. The pick-up pattern should be set Cardioid. depending on how much "stereo effect" you want to get from the result. With this technique there will not be any phase issue since the capsules are very close one another. A good starting point is to position the microphones 15cm away from the 12th fret of the neck.
The second technique is the ORTF (name taken from the Organisation Radio Television Française who mastered this miking method) where the position of the microphones emulates the way the human ears perceive the sound. The capsules are positioned approximately 17cm away one from the other, forming an angle of 110° which results in a natural stereo effect with the microphones positioned at 20cm away from the frets.
The third technique is the Spaced Pair. The two microphones are wide open respect to the 2 previous techniques. The first microphone is positioned in correspondence of the 12th fret and the second microphone must stay at a distance which is 3 times the distance of the first mic from the instrument toward the body of the guitar, this is a good rule of thumb to avoid undesired phase issues. On the first microphone it is useful to activate the hi-pass filter to avoid low frequencies already captured from the second microphone.
The microphones used are the NOVE NV-01 multi-pattern FET condenser microphone set to cardioid, with no pad and no 80Hz-cut activated ([ Ссылка ]...)
