Bob Young clarifies the difference between the terms "802.11" and "Wi-Fi." 802.11 is the technical term and describes the standard for wireless protocol in which all vendors must comply. Wi-Fi is the proprietary term which certifies compatibility between vendors.

I'm Bob Young here with Nuts About Nets to answer the question, "What is 802.11?" The 802 Series of Standards are owned and maintained by the IEEE which is the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. 802.11 is the wireless protocol that is compatible with the wired protocol we use for most of our networks in the world today.

There is another term that's similar and that's "Wi-Fi." Wi-Fi is a branded name owned by the Wi-Fi Consortium. And the Wi-Fi Consortium certifies that devices manufactured by different vendors, according to the 802.11 Standard, are compatible with each other and can be used together in the same network.

Why do we care about 802.11? 802.11 is a wonderful protocol for allowing us to combine wired and wireless elements in the same network.
