The Book Of The Dead - Egyptian Mythology:
The roughly 200 spells in The Book of the Dead are meant to guide the soul through the dangers of the afterlife and deliver them to divinity in paradise with the gods.
Modern societies have benefited greatly from the Book of the Dead's contributions in understanding the significance that the Egyptians ascribed to passing away and the trip to the afterlife. The Book of the Dead was originally a collection of spells that were eventually collected, numbered, and arranged into a single book. The Pyramid Texts are the first and oldest collection of spells, which were discovered on the walls of the pyramids.
Only Pharaohs were intended for them, so that they may join Ra in Aaru, or Paradise. The tombs of society's richest people contained the second set of spells. These were known as the Coffin Texts, because they were mostly written within the coffins of the deceased. The Saite Compilation is the name of the last series of spells. These were mostly written on papyrus and applied to Egypt's servant class as well as other common people.
The book is divided into four sections, each of which covers a different stage of the journey to the afterlife. The soul and body enter the underworld in the first segment. The second part of the book tells the story of how the gods were created and how their corpses were prepared for resurrection as Aaru. The final segment describes the soul's journey through the sky, past the sun, and down to Osiris in Daut, where they are assessed using Ma'at's scales of justice. If the heart is heavy with impurity, it is consumed by a creature known as Ammut. Their hearts are weighed on a scale against a feather.
The soul eventually ascends to Aaru to assume his position as one of the gods if it passes the test.
By adopting the mummification process, the Egyptians took great care to ensure that their deceased were ready for such a journey. The heart was left in the body since it was thought to be the most significant organ in the body and would be utilized in the scale ceremony to best assess the virtues of the deceased.
