After 28 years, a working prototype of the unreleased WorkBoy add-on for the Game Boy has been uncovered by video game historian Liam Robertson. Robertson and the WorkBoy are featured in a recent Game History Secrets video on the Did You Know Gaming? Youtube channel.
Background on the WorkBoy:
The WorkBoy features a keyboard and software including 12 apps, including an address book, calculator and appointment book. It was planned as an officially licensed accessory developed by Source Research and Development and produced by Fabtek Inc in collaboration with Nintendo. The device was shown off at the 1992 CES expo and covered by various outlets at the time. A Game Boy price cut was apparently the reason for the project cancellation, as the Work Boy would have been more expensive than the machine itself..
How Robertson uncovered the working prototype:
Robertson tracked down Eddit Gill, the architect of the WorkBoy, who said there are only 2 known working prototypes - one likely held by Nintendo and the other by Fabtek founder Frank Ballouz. He then contacted Ballouz, who sent it to him. The accessory requires the WorkBoy software to function - and in a wild coincidence the rom was found in the recent Nintendo Gigaleaks. By adding the rom to a cartridge, Robertson was able to get the prototype working.
Some additional info:
▸ Eddie Gill's work on the project inspired a new patent design that was licensed to produce the Nokia 9000 Communicator.
▸ Gill also worked with Nintendo on making a WorkBoy for the Game Boy Advance which got cancelled.
