Is there a difference between PCOD and PCOS?
In short,NO!
There is no need to get confused over the different terminologies associated with polycystic ovaries.
Whatever name it goes by,it implies an underlying state of hormonal dysfunction causing disturbances in ovulation as well as predisposition to a group of medical problems called the metabolic syndrome.
20-25% of normal women may also have the characteristic polycystic appearance of the ovaries on the ultrasound. But as they do not have any of the other accompanying hormonal problems,we do not have categorise them under PCOS nor do they require any treatment.
We sometimes refer to this appearance of the ovaries as PCOM or polycystic ovarian morphology on the ultrasound report.
