Delegates to the International Whaling Commission (IWC) have gathered in Morocco for a major conference on the future of whale hunting.
Participants at the five-day meeting are set to debate a proposal to overturn a ban on the commercial hunting of whales - considered the most direct threat to the survival of the sea creatures.
Whaling would be regulated for the next 10 years if the deal is agreed upon. But conservationists argue that the regulation does not go far enough.
The meeting comes as the annual whaling season gets underway in Iceland.
Al Jazeera's Laurence Lee reports from Iceland's capital, Reykjavik, on the struggle to save whales in the country.
