Let's talk about some "Watchouts" regarding carrying in your vehicle to ensure that you are both legal, safe and not the victim of a theft.
First off, if you have an Illinois License to Carry, while you are in your vehicle, your gun can be loaded and on you (in a holster) or "about your person." The phrase "on or about your person" is used to refer to the fact that you may keep your gun on you in a holster or pocket (on your person) or in a briefcase, purse or bag (about your person.).
In the vehicle, you must have the gun concealed from view. Now, technically, you could have it lying on the seat next to you covered with a magazine, but that would not be a very smart idea. If you came to a sudden stop, the gun could easily slide onto the floor. However, though irresponsible, this would fit the definition of concealed.
Now, if you leave the gun in the vehicle, it MUST be locked. What must be locked, the gun or the vehicle? YES! If you lock the vehicle, you don't have to have the gun in a locked container. However, the gun MUST be in a container and not merely "concealed from view" if you leave it.
Finally, it's important to realize that there are criminals out there who steal for a living, and are thinking about concealed carry and prohibited areas. You should always assume that you are being watched, so pulling into the parking lot of a prohibited area with your NRA bumper stickers and then being seen reaching over and putting something in your glovebox is just ADVERTISING that you have a gun ready to be stolen.
It's best to pull over somewhere BEFORE you get to the prohibited area and secure your gun. AND, give a little thought to all the bumper stickers.
Whether you're looking for basic or advanced pistol training or want to get an Illinois License to Carry, you've come to the right place.
First, let me explain about the Illinois License to Carry. The law requires 16 hours of training, but allows for 8 hours to be credited for military service, or if you have taken one of 3 NRA classes. In addition, you may also have 8 hours of credit, or at least 4 hours, from taking an Illinois Hunter's Safety Class, the Chicago Firearms Permit Training, or if you have a CCW Permit from another state.
Whether you have 8 hours of credit or 4 hours or none at all, we offer the classes that will get you your Illinois License to Carry.
Let's start with the 2nd 8 hours of training that everyone will need. This class is divided into 4 hours of legal training and 4 hours of weapons training, including the shooting qualification. You do NOT have to take this course last, as long as you are comfortable and competent with a handgun. Many people find themselves taking the classes out of sequence due to scheduling issues, and that's okay.
The first 8 hours of training is offered in two 4-hour sessions, since many people already have 4 hours of prior credit. We call these Section "A" and Section "B". Section "A" qualifies you for a Utah CCW Permit, which is great if you travel, as this is honored in 30 states. Section "B" will also qualify you for non-resident permits from Florida and Arizona, if you want to get those, and they will allow you to carry in a total of 32 states.
So, what about all this training? The classes offered by Illinois Gun Pros are interactive, engaging and hands-on. If you want to hear from some of our students who have taken classes from Illinois Gun Pros, you can look on IllinoisCarry.com or on our Facebook Page, which is called IllinoisConcealedCarryClass.
