DISCLAIMER: THIS VIDEO IS NOT MADE FOR KIDS THIS IS ONLY MADE FOR TEENS AND ADULTS WHO LIKE THE MUPPETS, SESAME STREET, OR FRAGGLE ROCK EVERYONE CAN ENJOY THIS AND SAY WHAT THEY WANT IN THE COMMENTS
Here’s an uncut DVD Quality Rip of the classic holiday special A Muppet Family Christmas which aired on ABC on December 16, 1987. This special is regarded as a classic by many Muppets, Sesame Street, and Fraggle Rock fans as it’s one of the rare times the three franchises crossover together. The special also includes guest star Gerard Parkes as Doc from the North America segments of Fraggle Rock. Unfortunately this special is surrounded by licensing issues due to the owners of The Muppets which their now owned by Disney, Sesame Street owned by Sesame Workshop, and Fraggle Rock by Hit Entertainment which would also be later bought by Mattel. And not just that, it’s music rights as well, which led to edits on tv airings after 1988 and all home video releases have edits. The last time this special was ever released was in 2001 on DVD and the last time it aired on Television was in 2002 on the Hallmark channel. The 2001 DVD release in the United States has several scenes missing and Disney stopped making new prints in the late 2000s. And sadly it seems like it will probably never get a modern day re-release due to licensing issues but thankfully it has been archived online. It seems like one of the best releases of the special is the Pal and Portugal DVD Release as it’s 99% uncut with a few minor scenes removed and the Region 2 DVD is not that expensive or hard to find but if you live in the United States it requires a Region 2 DVD and unfortunately it’s in pal pitch so either rip the disc and edit the pitch to the original or simply if you have a pc use a program like VLC Player to edit the playback speed to the original. Which here’s a clean rip of the DVD in its original Framerate from archive.org by user Ewzzy that was posted on December 19, 2023. According to the description of the post “This is a combination of the US and Portugal DVDs to create a 47:36 version. Unlike other restorations this uses QTGMC to deinterlace the video into a proper 60fps. This is not an AI interpolation. The original video is 480i60 so the smooth motion is there in the source. It also uses the RainbowSmooth, MLDegrain, and BlindDeHalo3 Vapoursynth filters to clean up the video. Again, there's no AI upscale or over sharpening. The goal is a to bring out the original quality even if that's a bit soft. The re-inserted bits are a bit softer from the source. The AV sync in Miss Piggy's "Home For The Holidays" song has been fixed as well.” So yeah while this is not an upscale, it’s to look accurate to the original resolution as possible without that much compression and the original Framerate as the production crew intended which is different from most uploads of the special on YouTube. So special thanks to archive.org user Ewzzy for putting in the effort for making this clean looking rip, can’t share the link though due to copyright but it shouldn’t be hard to find.
So enjoy this piece of Muppet, Sesame Street, and Fraggle Rock history.
Also Rest In Peace Jerry Juhl, Peter Harris, Richard Hunt, Jerry Nelson, Gerald Parkes, Caroll Spinney, and Jim Henson. You all will be deeply missed.
