India and the US are in advanced talks about jointly manufacturing Stryker infantry combat vehicles (ICVs). The plan has three phases: first, buying a few Stryker ICVs from the US; second, producing them together in India; and third, co-developing advanced versions of these vehicles.
However, some believe India should focus on making its own advanced ICVs which are already in progress instead of working on the Stryker ICVs which aren't suitable for high-altitude or amphibious operations.
Tata Advanced Systems and the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) have already created the Wheeled Armoured Platform (WhAP), also known as the TATA ‘Kestrel,’ unveiled at Defexpo 2014 in Delhi.
The decision of whether India should import these vehicles from the US or continue developing its own is an important topic for discussion.
