After hiking through the Bolivian Andes, I decided to power through 12 hours of bus rides to explore this remote part of Bolivia. When was I going to get this chance again?
It’s no exaggeration to say the Uyuni Salt Flats (Salar de Uyuni) are one of the most striking places on I’ve ever seen. Formed very recently from the evaporation of an ancient lake, the Uyuni Salt Flats cover a staggering 4000 square miles (11,000 square km), more than enough room for the hundreds of tourists who might be simultaneously exploring them on the same day as you.
If you want to drop the money, I highly recommend a private tour, especially if you want to shoot drone footage. Otherwise, you’re more tied to the group schedule. It also gives you more opportunity to interact with your guide. I had a great time with my friendly and knowledgeable guide Aida Belen.
